Water management and sustainable development in agriculture
There are three training tracks related to water management. All of them start in Wageningen, where the basis are given.
The M2 can then be done at Copenhagen, Montpellier or Catania.
- Continuing at Copenhagen (water management : operation and design) specialises the most in the water use;
- while in Montpellier (water management for rural development), the M2 will open towards the water and development policy issues or the global development of irrigation based farming systems;
- in Catania (water management in horticulture), the development of horticulture with irrigation will be considered.
- Wageningen University (Netherlands) for the M1.
- University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Life Sciences (Denmark) for the M2.
Training objectives:
Graduates should be able to:
- Scientifically analyse physical, technical and socio-economic aspects of land and water management;
- Develop a comparative insight in different land use and land management situations;
- Work at different scales (field, farm, watershed and region), with different actors;
- Develop an academic and interdisciplinary attitude.

Training objectives:
Graduates should be able to:
- Scientifically analyse physical, technical and socio-economic aspects of land and water management;
- Develop a comparative insight in different land use and land management situations;
- Develop an academic and interdisciplinary attitude;
- Work at different scales (field, farm, watershed and region), with different actors;
- Relate irrigated production to the other sectors of the rural livelihood;
- Critically assess irrigated systems in order to identify limiting factors and bottlenecks;
- Evaluate (technical, economic, social) consequences of the possible solutions for all the people concerned;
- Conceptualise and implement global development policies / projects in situations where irrigation is key;
- Monitor and evaluate irrigation development projects.

For the M2 in Montpellier, students will follow a specialisation called SAT (admin/files/sat-presentation-generale-&-objectifs_en.docx ; admin/files/sat-ue-par-parcours-et-ects_enx.pdf).
This specialisation offers 2 separate majors :
- RESAD (admin/files/parcours-resad-complet_enx.pdf ; admin/files/parcours-resad-resume_en.docx) and
- MOQUAS (admin/files/parcours-moquas-complet-1_enx.pdf).
Students will have to choose between RESAD and MOQUAS.
- Wageningen University (Netherlands) for the M1
- University of Catania (Italy) for the M2
Training objectives:
Graduates should be able to:
- Scientifically analyse physical, technical and socio-economic aspects of horticultural production under irrigation;
- Analyse processes in integrated production and protection (from pests and diseases) of vegetable and fruit crops;
- Work at different scales (field, farm, watershed and region), with different actors;
- Develop an academic and interdisciplinary attitude.
