Management of natural resources and sustainable development in agriculture

There are two training tracks based on agricultural development. Both start in Copenhagen, where the basis are given.

The M2 can then be done at Montpellier or Catania:
-          Continuing at Montpellier (agricultural development in smallholders systems) the training track will offer a wide competence in supporting sustainable agricultural development or management of natural resources. Two options in Montpellier allow either to concentrate on systemic approaches (more environment and technical issues) or on policy questions (land, services and chains organisation);
-          In Catania (safe production in horticulture), the orientation is more technical and specialised in horticulture.

Training delivered at:
-          Faculty of Life Sciences, Copenhagen (Denmark) for the M1 (Teaching in English)
-          Montpellier SupAgro (France) for the M2 (Teaching in French)

Training objectives:
Graduates should be able to:
-          identify the critical aspects of professional situations within natural resource management in relation to agricultural activities;
-          describe the patterns characterising these situations.

The Agricultural Development programme is a combination of:
-          an interdisciplinary field-oriented common part which includes training in techniques for gathering data under a variety of field conditions combined with training in the research process;
-          a selective part which facilitates specialisation, and
-          the thesis, which includes field work in the setting of a developing country.

Employment prospects
Firstly, the programme qualifies the graduate to carry out research within agriculture-related activities in temperate, subtropical or tropical environments.
Sectors of particular relevance are:
-          Agricultural universities;
-          International research institutions such as the CG centres;
-          Sector research institutions.
Secondly, the unique combination of field-and discipline-related activities within the same programme qualifies the graduate to carry out adviser- or policy-related activities within agricultural development.
Sectors of particular relevance are:
-          Funding and Development agencies;
-          Non-governmental organisations;
-          Professional organisations.
